Kenya
“I am 10 years old.  Before the installation of water at my school, I would walk to the river to get water for my family, but would become very tired and so I would never attend classes in the afternoon.  Now that a borehole has been drilled at our school, I don’t miss classes as I used to and perform better in class.” Millennium Water Alliance

“I am 12 years old…I stopped going to school in the third grade because my father said I needed to help the family by selling water…I would love to go back to school, but my family needs the money I make collecting and selling the water.” West Africa Water Initiative  -Water is Key: A Better Future for Africa, Gil Garcetti

Philippines

A Save the Children school and community-based health education intervention aimed at reducing the prevalence of soil-transmitted intestinal worm infection in Manila, Philippines dramatically reduced worm prevalence from 49.7% in 2004 to 16% in 2006.  In addition to the health education conducted in schools and communities, the construction of hand-washing facilities and drinking water fountains in schools were major contributors to the project’s success.  Save the Children
